Funeral Program

Upon the passing of an individual, it is customary in Sikh traditions for the Antam Sankar, or Last Rites, to be conducted in the presence of family members.

In accordance with the wishes of the family involved, OKD Gurdwara Sahib provides a Granthi Singh (Preacher) to accompany the family to the funeral homes for the performance of the last rites. The recitation of Sukhmani Sahib, along with Kirtan Sohila and Antim Ardas (Last Prayer), will be conducted in accordance with Sikh traditions.

Following the cremation, the family will proceed to the Gurdwara where the Bhog of Akhand Paath Sahib or Sehaj Paath Sahib will take place, along with Alahniya Da Paath, followed by kirtan and Ardas. The entire process is designed to honor the deceased and provide spiritual support to the grieving family, ensuring that all rituals are performed respectfully and in alignment with Sikh customs.
This observance not only serves as a farewell to the departed but also reinforces the community’s role in supporting the family during their time of loss, fostering a sense of unity and shared faith.

Kiratpur Park - A Place for Ash Dispersion

In accordance with the shared beliefs of the Sikh community, although not explicitly mandated by the Sikh Rehat Maryada, which is the Sikh Code of Conduct, it is customary for the ashes of a deceased family member to be scattered in flowing water.

In the event of a death within Sikh families living in Canada, it can often be challenging to transport the deceased’s body or ashes back to Punjab for final rites. To assist families of all faiths, Ontario Khalsa Darbar has established Kiratpur Park along the Etobicoke Creek, conveniently located near Gurdwara Sahib.

To support the bereaved families, Ontario Khalsa Darbar provides a Granthi Singh or priest, if needed, to conduct the last prayers for the departed and maintains a record at the OKD Office.
